Dark Sky Farm is a small developing rural property in rural Southwest Louisiana. This is a place shaped by hot weather, a rich soil, tools and the quiet presence of the night sky. We showcase the work, the experiments, the observations, and the slow process of learning how to live comfortably on a rural piece of land.
We left our life in Huntsville Alabama in search of something different: more space, a closer connection to nature, and the opportunity to build a quieter way of living. Dark Sky Farm will be our home on 75 wooded acres, where each season brings new projects, new lessons, and a deeper appreciation for the land.
Here you’ll find stories about developing our property, growing and preserving food, caring for the woods, observing the wildlife that shares this place with us, and enjoying the incredible beauty of a truly dark night sky. Along the way, we also explore practical ways to become more self-sufficient. We are learning skills that help us adapt to our changing weather, economic uncertainty, and the unexpected challenges that life can bring.
Our life is simple: resilience is built one step at a time. Planting a garden. Learning to preserve a harvest. Maintaining tools. Improving the soil. Walking the woods. Growing a garden. Watching the seasons. Preparing for a power outage or hurricane. Identifying the birds at the feeder. Looking up at the Milky Way on a clear night. None of these things alone changes your life, but together they create a life that is more connected, capable, and rewarding.

It’s a record of what we’re learning as we shape our little corner of the world a try to be good stewards of the land. The name Dark Sky Farm comes from the real darkness at night that first made this place feel like home. Far from city lights, the stars shine brighter. The sky becomes part of the landscape again, just as present as the fields, trees, and garden beds.

South Louisiana shapes everything at Dark Sky Farm. The long growing seasons, heavy rains, intense heat, insects, and shifting weather patterns are our constant companions. The land asks for patience and adaptability, and it rewards attention more than control. We have a slow period in mid-summer where it is nearly too hot to garden. This shapes our planting schedule. The farm exists within this specific climate and culture, and this blog does not try to generalize beyond it. What works here may not work elsewhere and that’s part of the point.
